My group is creating an interactive resource with the topic of elementary math for grade 2s. We include 3 subtopics which include estimation, addition and subtraction. The following is a video about estimation aimed for learners at the elementary level:

  1. What kind of interaction would the video require from your students? Does it force them to respond in some way (inherent)?

This video provided a good progression for students learning estimation. The video first reviewed concepts that students should know and that is needed when using estimation. Then the video familiarizes students with quantities so that students can use them in the estimation challenges that follow. The type of interaction this video provided was Learner-Content and although the video does ask questions, I would say responses are not enforced and therefore the video is inherent. 

  1. What activity could you suggest that they do, after they have watched the video (designed)? What type of knowledge or skill would that activity help develop? What medium or technology would students use to do the activity?

After the video I would suggest first checking the student’s comprehension and understanding of the video by presenting them with questions similar to those presented in the video. So this would be getting students to estimate the number of objects in a picture after familiarizing them with what a certain quantity of that object looks like. After this check in understanding I would suggest a collaborative activity such as estimating a classmate’s height so students can experience Learner-Learner interaction and learn what strategies their classmates may use when they are estimating. For what medium each type of activity may use, the checking of understanding can be done by worksheet or an online game (here is an example of a game that could be used) both mediums would allow for teachers to see where the students weaknesses and strengths are. The collaborative activity would have to be done in class as it would be difficult, especially for grade 2 students, to try this activity with online communication tools. 

  1. How could the video have been designed to generate more or better activity from viewers or students?

The video often asks students questions then provides no time for students to answer. I think if a pause were to be added after the questions this would allow for the students to be able to think and formulate an answer which is not possible at the current pace of the video. 

  1. How will you address any potential barriers for your learners in the use of this video to ensure an inclusive design?

This video includes subtitles which is useful for any students who may have any hearing impairments. This video however does include lots of extra noises and content which may make it difficult for learners with attention/concentration challenges to focus on the intended topic of the video. For this situation one solution could be to have the student try and watch the video with the sound lowered and then check their understanding after with a relevant activity.
